AREA INFORMATION

Lake Murray

The Lake Murray area is home to one of Columbia's finest recreational assets. A hydro-electirc development, Lake Murray was created in 1930 by damming the Saluda River. Over 5,000 people were relocated - 3 churches, 6 schools and 193 graveyards (2,323 graves) were moved. The lake covers 50,000 acres, is 41 miles long, 14 miles wide (at the widest point), has over 520 miles of shoreline and covers four counties - Richland, Lexington, Newberry & Saluda. All of the lake's shoreline is accessible to Columbia within 20-60 minutes. Until the 1960's Lake Murray was the largest earthen dam in the world!

Lake Murray SC homes and real estate Recreational boating is the number one activity for most lake residents. There are 25 marinas and landings for wet and dry boat storage, repair, gas & supplies. Lake Murray's fishing is legendary and is best known for 4 types of fish - striped bass (record 53lbs.), largemouth bass, bream & crappie.

The early days most of the homes at Lake Murray were weekend homes, but today thousands of Columbians call Lake Murray their permanent home. The climate, excellent schools and recreational activities have contributed to incredible growth in new communities and homes. There is nothing any finer than Lake Murray in Carolina!
